Blog 7 (Week 3)
This
week we're finishing up the songs that we’ve started, and are starting
to make the last song of the album. The last song was very important to us, so
we wanted to make sure it was very touching, but not too corny. I knew I wanted
some type of guitar because guitars can be super pretty, somewhat sad, and
extremely nostalgic. That was the feeling we were going for for the last song.
One night, at around midnight, I was chilling on my bed and decided to grab my
guitar. I don’t know many chords so I kind of put my fingers in random places
and hope it sounds good when I strum. However, with a stroke of luck, I found a
really pretty chord progression that conveyed the exact same feelings that I
mentioned earlier. I believe it is a e7, c7, amin7, bmin, chord progression. I
spend a good while choosing what kind of picking pattern I wanted to use for
the rhythm. In the end I decided to keep it very simple, and somewhat empty in
order to maximize space for Angus’ vocals. You’ll hear it once we finish. I
think it might be my favorite song on the album, depending on how it comes out.
Angus always comes up with the best melodies, so I’m very excited to see what
it all sounds like once we put it into production. The vocals are going to be
very pretty and hopefully somewhat tear jerking. When we were writing the song,
I described it as a song that people would wish was longer. I will be leaving
Hawken feeling like I want to spend one more year there because I feel like I
want to stay with my friends for a bit longer, so we want to make a song that
makes these people feel the same way.
Donovan, thank you for posting all of the videos! Although they are short, they give me a good sense of your group's song writing process and Nwaka's reactions to your work. I could tell that you were even more proud of your work by her positive reaction. I love that you were able to try something new and invited some friends over to watch you work. I can imagine that having some people over gave your creative process a new twist and some needed inspiration. I'm glad that you and your group worked out a system that they would buy you lunch if you drove them around. I know that system wasn't perfect, but I'm glad you were able to agree. I can't wait to hear your songs! - Mrs. Mullen
