Blogs 2 (Week 1 Reflections)
This week Angus, King and I have begun to start some of the songs in the album. I have been pretty busy with APs and track so we didn't get as much time to work together as we would have liked, but regardless, we still got a solid amount of work done. We've pretty much established our general workflow and what type of collaboration works best for use. Generally, when thinking of new melodies, chord progressions, or lyrics, we'll be outside, strumming the guitar, in my living room playing the piano, or even just walking around my neighborhood waiting for inspiration to strike. Then as we get a general idea of what the song is going to be about/what it'll sound like, we'll go downstairs in my basement to begin production and recording. It's a very natural workflow and I think it is quite productive. Of course, we don't confine ourselves to just that method of work. If we ever want to start with production (which means producing the beat/instrumental), we'll start with that in my basement. It is quite free-flowing but that is how believe music should be made. Whatever comes, comes, and we just create off of the vibe and what we're feeling during that period of time. Something that we've found to be very helpful is to watch music videos. Not those videos of people dancing over a song, but videos with real, organic music: live concerts, making-of videos, production process videos etc. These videos all serve to inspire us and give us different ideas to make music with. Typically, I'll be the person sitting in front of the computer putting the sounds and recordings into production. I handle all of the technical stuff, while Angus and King handle the lyrics and melodies and stuff like that. Of course, our roles intersect very often. I've contributed to a fair amount of lyrics that we've put into our songs and Angus and King have contributed a lot to the actual production and instrumentals of the songs.
